Yoris Sebastian is a winner of the 2006 International Young Creative Entrepreneur of the Year – Music Award held by British Council, UK that become a Chief Creative Officer of OMG Creative Consulting. He was also the youngest General Manager in Hard Rock Café Asia Pacific when he was 26 years-old.
In a seminar that was held by Yamaha and Majalah Marketing, in which he was the speaker, he talked about “being creative in a youth”. He told the participants how to build our creativity skills.
1. Creativity is a habit, not a genetic
Creativity can be built, not just taken for granted. Some of us may think that creativity is closely related with art which is difficult to be evolved if we have no flair on it. Actually, although we have no flair on art, we still able to be creative by try to break our habits. For example, changing on which hand side we wear our watch, come home through different way, try to have lunch in different restaurant, etc. By doing these things, we will be familiar with something new so that we can open up our mind.
2. Knowledge is power
Someone said book is world’s window. In this era, we can explore our knowledge not only through the books but also through the internet, watching movies, asking someone that has many experiences, etc. By having much knowledge, we could open our eyes and our mind. Here, we will get the idea to do something.
3. Practice makes perfect
Yoris said that creativity needs to be grinded. Just like a singer that maybe nervous and hard to remember the song lyric in his/her first show. By exercise and always exercise, that singer will be able to sing better and leave his/her nervousness out.
4. Become the apprentice
Means, we should learn from our senior. Be different from him/her but still respect them. Not only through the supervisor, we can be an apprentice from anyone; our parents, our friends, even our competitor.
5. Do not copy paste
Do not me-too-ism.
If we are same as everybody else, then what will we be used to? Take the idea from someone else is not a sin but always be original, make a difference from someone else’s ideas.
6. Creativity emerges when we face difficulties
A need of something will stimulate our mind to think harder and more creative. Laid under a necessity of money will make us think many ways to reach more income. Laid under a necessity of getting good score in school will make us think ways to be effective on study.
7. Become a problem solver
The idea we produce should be a solver of problem faced by other. It will make our idea (our project) being more meaningful.
8. Calculated risk-taker culture
Thinking out of the box is a good thing, execute inside the box. Try to stay focus on the problem.
The most important thing of those points is that try to find your passion. Find anything you like. Do anything you like. But of course, be responsible of what you’ve done.
